LionChief with Voice Control at $299.99 puts a genuinely modern operating experience in reach for a new hobbyist or a returning collector, and the BNSF Heritage III paint is clean and correct. Not Legacy-compatible, but that is not what this locomotive is for.

Design

The GP38 is the workhorse of the modern short line — over 700 built for American railroads between 1966 and 1971, and still in daily service on countless carriers today. Lionel's LionChief version captures the correct hood profile, radiator layout, and cab treatment. The BNSF Heritage III scheme (orange with black-and-yellow accents, "Heritage" swoosh) is one of the cleanest modern diesel paint jobs and Lionel gets it right. Handrails are plastic (this is a LionChief-tier product) but every grab iron is separately applied and the truck sideframes are die-cast with correct Blomberg-M detail. The cab has a molded interior and a single crew figure. For a $299 locomotive, the detail level is genuinely surprising.

Setup

Out of the box, the GP38 runs on any AC transformer — throttle it up and it moves, with basic horn and bell. Pair it with the free LionChief app on iOS or Android (Bluetooth range about 40 feet) and you unlock full speed control, RailSounds diesel package with prime-mover start-up and shutdown, dynamic braking, air compressor, and five horn tones. Lionel Voice Control is the new feature — activate it in the app, then say commands like "engine forward slow" or "sound the horn" and the locomotive responds. Performance

The single flywheel motor delivers smooth slow-speed operation — you can move this locomotive at scale switching pace with no lurching. Top-end speed is modest (about a scale 45 mph) which is exactly right for a GP38 in freight service. RailSounds is louder and cleaner than earlier LionChief releases — the 2026 audio hardware is a real step up. The GP38 handles O-31 curves without complaint, making it the right locomotive for a 4x8 or oval layout.
