Best Places to Visit

The top 10 destinations every model train enthusiast should make the trip for — from shows to museums to operating railroads.

#1

Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers (NLOE)

TOP PICK
Long Island, NYOperating Club

The Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers (NLOE), based in Levittown, NY, operate the largest O-gauge layout on Long Island — an 80×30 foot room-size Hi-Rail layout with over 3,000 feet of Gargraves track and 120+ switches. Founded in 1983, the club is members-only but opens to the public roughly ten times a year for open house events. This is one of the finest operating O-gauge club layouts in the United States. If you're on the East Coast and want to see what serious O-gauge operation looks like at full scale, NLOE is the destination.

Best for: Serious operators, East Coast collectors, anyone who wants to see world-class O-gauge in person

Pro tip: Check their schedule before visiting — they host about 10 public open house days per year at 2953 Hempstead Tpke, Levittown, NY.

#2

York Fairgrounds — TCA York Train Show

York, PATrain Show

The largest model train show in the world. The TCA York Meet at the York Fairgrounds is held twice a year — April and October — and draws thousands of dealers and tens of thousands of attendees. Every major brand, every era, every scale. If you only go to one show in your collecting life, make it York. The October show is the larger of the two.

Best for: Buying, selling, rare finds, networking with serious collectors

Pro tip: Arrive Friday for setup day access (TCA members) or Saturday at opening for the best selection.

#3

Strasburg Rail Road

Strasburg, PAOperating Railroad

America's oldest short-line railroad in continuous operation. The Strasburg Rail Road runs full-size steam locomotives through the Lancaster County farmland — the same country roads your Lionel Heritage models depict. Pair it with the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania directly across the street for a full day of railroad history.

Best for: Families, steam enthusiasts, prototype photography

Pro tip: Book the cab ride on the steam locomotive for an experience you'll never forget.

#3

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania

Strasburg, PAMuseum

Directly across from Strasburg Rail Road, this state museum houses one of the finest collections of full-size railroad equipment in the world — including a room-length O-gauge layout that will give you layout envy for years. The collection of Pennsylvania Railroad equipment is unmatched anywhere in the country.

Best for: O-gauge layout inspiration, prototype photography, railroad history

Pro tip: The working shop floor lets you see restoration in progress. Go on a weekday when staff are more available to talk.

#4

California State Railroad Museum

Sacramento, CAMuseum

The largest railroad museum in North America. Over 225,000 square feet of restored locomotives and cars, including the famous Central Pacific and Southern Pacific equipment that built the transcontinental railroad. The museum's model railroad exhibit includes a large operating layout that runs during weekend hours.

Best for: Western railroad history, transcontinental railroad buffs, families

Pro tip: Take the excursion train along the Sacramento River — it runs on weekends April through September.

#5

B&O Railroad Museum

Baltimore, MDMuseum

Built around the original 1884 Baltimore & Ohio roundhouse — the oldest surviving railroad roundhouse in America. The circular main building houses an extraordinary collection of B&O equipment in an architecturally stunning space. The model railroad layouts inside are some of the best permanent installations in the mid-Atlantic.

Best for: Architecture, B&O and early American railroad history, East Coast collectors

Pro tip: The holiday train display in December draws massive crowds — arrive early.

#6

Illinois Railway Museum

Union, ILMuseum

The largest railway museum in the US by track mileage — over 50 acres with more than 400 pieces of equipment. Electric interurbans, steam locomotives, diesel freight units, and a massive O-gauge model railroad. Everything is restoration-active and much of it is operable. The museum runs steam and electric excursions on weekends.

Best for: Midwest collectors, traction fans, operating days with running equipment

Pro tip: Visit on Steam Days (select weekends) when they're running the big steam locomotives.

#7

Smithsonian National Museum of American History

Washington, D.C.Museum

The Smithsonian's American history collection includes significant railroad artifacts and an O-gauge layout display. More importantly, the museum is free and the surrounding National Mall is steps away from the Capitol, making this the easiest stop on any East Coast road trip. The transportation halls have been recently updated.

Best for: East Coast road trips, families, free admission

Pro tip: The railroad artifacts are in the 'America on the Move' exhibition on the first floor.

#8

Museum of Science and Industry

Chicago, ILMuseum

Home to one of the most famous permanent model railroad exhibits in the country — a large-scale layout depicting Chicago area rail operations. The HO and O-gauge displays are impressive but the museum's other exhibits (including a captured German U-boat) make this a full-day destination. The Great Train Story exhibit is worth the admission alone.

Best for: Families, Chicago area visitors, model railroad display inspiration

Pro tip: The Great Train Story exhibit alone is worth the trip — it's one of the finest permanent layouts open to the public.

#9

Carnegie Science Center — Miniature Railroad & Village

Pittsburgh, PAMuseum

The Carnegie Science Center's Miniature Railroad & Village has been operating since 1954 and is one of the longest-running model railroad exhibits in America. It depicts Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania at 1:24 scale with O-gauge trains running through detailed scenes that capture everyday life in the 1940s and 50s. A genuine piece of model railroad history.

Best for: Postwar era fans, families, historic operating layout

Pro tip: Go during the holiday season when they add special lighting effects to every scene.

#10

Springfield Train Show

Springfield, MATrain Show

New England's largest train show, held every January at the Eastern States Exposition. One of the oldest and most respected regional shows in the country, with a particularly strong Lionel postwar presence and quality dealers. For Northeast collectors who can't make it to York, Springfield is the must-attend show of the year.

Best for: Northeast collectors, postwar Lionel, January buying season

Pro tip: Dealers sell at better prices late Sunday afternoon when they don't want to pack everything back up.
