Best Model Train Shows in the US
From York to Springfield — the shows every serious O-gauge hobbyist should attend at least once.
York Train Show (TCA York Meet)
The undisputed king of model train shows. Held at the York Fairgrounds, the TCA York Meet draws thousands of dealers and tens of thousands of attendees twice a year. Every major brand, era, and scale is represented. If you collect O-gauge seriously, York is a pilgrimage. The October show is the larger of the two.
Best for: Serious collectors, rare finds, bulk buying
Springfield Train Show
One of the oldest and most respected regional shows in the country. The Springfield show draws Northeast collectors and is known for quality dealers and a strong Lionel postwar presence. Held indoors at the Eastern States Exposition, it's well-organized and comfortable even in January.
Best for: Postwar Lionel, New England dealers, HO and O-gauge
TCA National Convention
The Train Collectors Association's flagship annual event rotates cities each year and is open to TCA members. It features operating layouts, clinics, auctions, and the deepest concentration of rare prewar and postwar equipment you'll find outside of York. TCA membership is worth it for serious collectors.
Best for: Rare prewar pieces, networking, TCA members
Chicago Railroad Fair
The top Midwest show for O-gauge and all scales. Strong Lionel Legacy and MTH presence with Chicago-area dealers who carry excellent inventory. The Midwest has a deep community of serious operators and the Chicago show reflects that — expect knowledgeable dealers and serious buyers.
Best for: Midwest collectors, operating layouts, all scales
Great American Train Show
The Great American Train Show tours dozens of cities throughout the year, making it the most accessible show for hobbyists who don't travel to the major conventions. Quality varies by city and date, but it's a solid family-friendly event and a good place to find beginner-friendly inventory at reasonable prices.
Best for: Beginners, families, finding a local show
Greenberg Train Shows
Greenberg runs one of the largest touring train show circuits in America, hitting cities from coast to coast. Shows vary widely in size and quality, but they're excellent for finding affordable used equipment, starter sets, and accessories. The Greenberg shows are where many hobbyists buy their first trains.
Best for: Beginners, affordable used equipment, families
National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) Convention
The NMRA's annual convention is the broadest model railroad show in the country, covering every scale from Z to G. O-gauge presence is strong, particularly in the operating layout rooms. Excellent clinics, prototype photography, and a serious hobbyist crowd make this a worthwhile annual trip.
Best for: All scales, clinics and education, layout tours
