Sound: MTH Wins

MTH's Proto-Sound 3.0 is widely considered the finest sound system ever put into an O-gauge locomotive. The diesel prime mover audio is recorded from actual locomotive prime movers and features independent cab noise, synchronized exhaust, and a depth of ambient sound that Lionel's Legacy system, while excellent, hasn't fully matched.

That said, Lionel Legacy has closed the gap significantly with Legacy 6.0. For steam locomotives in particular, the synchronized smoke and chuff on a Legacy Vision Line steamer is a genuinely emotional experience.

Availability: Lionel Wins

MTH ceased new production in 2022 when founder Mike Wolf retired. This is the single most important practical difference between the two brands today. If you buy an MTH locomotive and something breaks, you're relying on the used parts market or third-party repair services. Lionel has active dealer support, a parts warehouse, and new releases every season.

For new buyers, this makes Lionel the clear default choice. For experienced collectors comfortable with the used market, MTH offers extraordinary value — Premier locomotives that sold for $600+ new can often be found for $200–$350 in excellent condition.

Can You Run Both?

Absolutely — and many serious operators do. Both run on standard O-gauge track. You'll need a Lionel Legacy command base for Legacy locos and an MTH DCS TIU for DCS locos, but both can coexist on the same layout running conventional or their respective command modes. Many operators run MTH Premier for their steam roster (for the sound) and Lionel Legacy for diesels (for the control precision).

Our Verdict

Buy Lionel if you're new, want ongoing support, or plan to expand your collection with new releases. The Legacy and LionChief ecosystems are healthy and growing.

Buy MTH if you're an experienced hobbyist who knows what you want, can evaluate used condition accurately, and want the best possible sound for your money. The used MTH market right now is exceptional value.
