Lionel's Vision Line has always been a steam-heavy program, so the 2026 announcement of a Vision Line GP40-2 got the diesel-freight side of the hobby genuinely excited. The Chessie System paint scheme — that unmistakable enamel blue with yellow and vermilion accents and the Chessie kitten silhouette — was the first roadname we requested for review. Here is what we found after 20 hours of test running.

Fan-driven smoke, prototype-accurate lighting, and a genuinely convincing prime-mover soundtrack put this a step above every other GP40-2 in the market. Priced accordingly and dependent on Legacy for the full experience, but if you run modern-era freight this is the new benchmark.

Design

The Chessie livery is one of the most photographed paint schemes in American railroading and Lionel nailed it. The blue has the correct enamel depth, the yellow ends and vermilion stripes are dead-on for hue and separation, and the Chessie kitten silhouette on the long hood is cleanly reproduced. Die-cast trucks, sprung roller-bearing sideframes, and etched-metal walkway grilles are all Vision Line-exclusive touches. The cab interior includes a full control stand and two crew figures. Handrails are metal, not plastic, and every grab iron is separately applied. Compared to the equivalent Legacy GP40-2 sitting next to it on our test bench, the Vision Line unit is visibly a step up in surface detail.

Setup

Like all Vision Line diesels, this GP40-2 needs a Legacy Command Base to unlock everything — smoke fan control, individual axle control, dynamic braking sounds, and the Super Bass profile. In conventional mode it will run and give you basic horn and bell, but you are leaving 80% of the value on the table without Legacy. Track requirements are friendly: O-31 curves work fine, though the model looks better on O-42 or wider where the trucks track cleanly through the frog.

Performance

The star of the show is the fan-driven smoke system. Turn it on and the exhaust stack produces a directional plume that responds to notching just like the prototype — a heavy load produces heavy smoke, coasting drops the output to a whisper. The Super Bass prime-mover sound has genuine chest-thump at higher volume, and the 16-cylinder EMD 645 note is one of the most accurate diesel recordings we have heard in O-gauge. Individual axle control lets you play with wheel slip on grades, which is a party trick that gets old fast but is fun once. Slow-speed operation is excellent thanks to the dual flywheel motors, and the working ditch lights and rotary beacon on the long hood add a legitimate lighting show for night running.

Value

At $899.99, this is a serious purchase for a four-axle diesel. But you are paying for real Vision Line differentiation — the smoke fan alone justifies a big chunk of the premium — and Chessie System collectors have been waiting years for a modern-electronics take on this scheme.
