Lionel's 2026 semiquincentennial program is more than the Reading T1 American Freedom Train. The Legacy C44-9W "Honor the Troops" is the diesel side of the commemorative lineup — a GE Dash 9-44CW in a stars-and-stripes tribute livery honoring American military service. We spent a week running it on our shop layout. Here is our full review.
Top Ten Verdict
A big, distinctive semiquincentennial diesel that looks striking on a display track and runs cleanly on any Legacy-equipped layout. Not for every era, but for anyone building a modern-freight or patriotic-themed layout in the 250th anniversary year, it is the standout diesel commemorative from Lionel's 2026 lineup.
Design
The Dash 9-44CW is one of the most successful modern six-axle diesels ever built — over 1,400 constructed for North American railroads — and Lionel's rendition captures the correct hood profile, radiator flare, and cab layout. The "Honor the Troops" livery is where this locomotive earns its place in the catalog: a full stars-and-stripes wrap on the long hood, matte navy blue base with white and vermilion accents, and correctly proportioned tribute graphics on both sides. Die-cast trucks with sprung sideframe equalization, separately applied handrails, and etched-metal walkway grilles put this squarely in the top tier of Lionel's Legacy diesel work. The cab interior includes a full modern GE control stand and a single crew figure. Working number boards, class lights, and a rotating beacon add night-run drama. Setup
The C44-9W runs in conventional mode on any AC transformer out of the box — throttle, horn, and bell. Legacy Command Base unlocks the full RailSounds package, individual axle control, momentum, and prototype-correct notching from idle to full throttle 8. Programming is straightforward: set the engine ID from the Cab-2 or Cab-3 handheld and you are running in under a minute. The six-axle wheelbase is the biggest track-geometry concern. O-42 curves work but the front truck visibly overhangs — O-54 or wider is the right home for this locomotive. Our Lionel Legacy vs LionChief guide is the best starting point for anyone new to the Legacy system.
Performance
Two flywheel-equipped motors deliver Lionel's expected slow-speed refinement — you can move this locomotive at scale switching pace with no hesitation. The RailSounds diesel package covers the full GE 7FDL 16-cylinder prime mover: start-up, shutdown, dynamic braking spool-up, air compressor cut-in, and the distinctive high-pitched turbo whine at throttle 8. Horn options include the modern Nathan K5LA and an alternate Leslie RS3L. Working ditch lights and the rotating beacon look excellent in a dimmed train room. Traction is more than sufficient for a 20-car unit train with modern hopper cars — we pulled 18 loaded coal hoppers up a 2% grade without slippage. This is a legitimate mainline engine for modern-era freight operators.
Value
At $749.99, the C44-9W sits comfortably between the Legacy GP40-2 ($649) and the Vision Line GP40-2 ($899). You are paying a premium over the Legacy four-axle for the six-axle chassis and the commemorative graphics, but you keep the same electronics and control features. Current availability at Amazon confirms it is a Lionel exclusive for 2026. For the top-tier alternative, our Vision Line GP40-2 Chessie review covers the flagship modern diesel in this year's lineup.
Verdict
The Lionel Legacy C44-9W "Honor the Troops" is the right diesel for anyone who wants a distinctive, patriotic 2026 commemorative that still runs and sounds like a modern GE unit. Recommended for semiquincentennial layouts and any operator with wide curves who wants a striking six-axle addition to their roster.
