The C&O Allegheny 2-6-6-6 was the most powerful steam locomotive ever built by Lima — and MTH's Premier O-gauge version does it full justice. This is a monster on the track in the best possible way.
## What Makes the Allegheny Special
The Chesapeake & Ohio H-8 class Allegheny was designed in the late 1930s to haul massive coal trains over the Allegheny Mountains. At 778,000 lbs of tractive effort, it was in a class by itself. Only 60 were ever built, and they ran until 1956.
In O-gauge, the Allegheny commands attention. At nearly 30 inches long, it takes up serious real estate on your layout — but every inch is earned.
## MTH Premier Detail and Sound
MTH's Proto-Sound 3.0 system delivers realistic steam chuffing that syncs with the drive wheels — no artificial sound loops here. The whistle, bell, and steam release sounds are sampled from actual recordings.
The diecast boiler shell, working headlight, and lighted cab make this a true shelf-piece when it's not running. Detail on the running gear — the massive drivers, valve gear, and trailing truck — is exceptional for the price point.
## DCS Compatibility
This locomotive runs on MTH's DCS (Digital Command System) which gives you full speed and sound control. It's also compatible with DCC layouts with the right decoder. Three-rail O-gauge out of the box.
**Note:** MTH went through bankruptcy in 2022, so parts and service have become harder to find. Buy from a reputable dealer with a return policy.
## Layout Requirements
You'll need minimum O-72 curves to run the Allegheny reliably. Don't try squeezing this into an O-31 layout — the 2-6-6-6 wheel arrangement demands real estate.
## The Bottom Line
If you want the most impressive steam locomotive you can put on an O-gauge layout, the MTH Premier C&O Allegheny is the answer. The combination of size, detail, and Proto-Sound 3.0 makes it one of the all-time great O-gauge models.
