If you want a diesel locomotive that stops conversations at the club layout, the Lionel Legacy Norfolk Southern Reading Heritage SD70ACe is it. Released as part of NS's fan-favorite Heritage program, this O-gauge model pays tribute to the fallen-flag Reading Railroad with a stunning blue and yellow Nittany Lion paint scheme — and Lionel absolutely nailed it.

Design & Detail

Out of the box, this thing is a showstopper. The Reading Heritage paint is crisply applied with zero bleed, the NS herald and Reading number boards are factory-applied with sharp contrast, and the cab interior features a detailed engineer figure. The die-cast chassis gives it serious weight and heft — this locomotive does not feel like a toy. It feels like a scale model.

Legacy 2.0 Performance

Under the hood, it's full Lionel Legacy 2.0: TMCC control, full diesel prime-mover sound with RPM-synchronized engine rev, crew talk, grade crossing whistle, and a smoke unit that actually puts out a convincing exhaust plume at speed. The motor is smooth and pull is strong — we ran it on grades up to 4% without a stutter.

One of the standout features is the dynamic digital sound. The SD70ACe in real life is a loud machine, and Lionel captures that with layered track speed sounds, independent horn and bell controls, and crew radio chatter. Pair this with a CAB-2 remote and you feel like a real engineer.

Track & Compatibility

This model runs on standard O-31 curves (it will negotiate O-27 but we don't recommend it — the overhang looks off). It works best on O-36 or wider. All FasTrack switches work fine; we tested it on a 40x80 layout without derailments.

Value

At $599.99 MSRP, this is a significant investment — but for a Legacy locomotive with Heritage paint, it's in line with the market. Secondary market prices for NS Heritage units are actually climbing, so buy-and-hold collectors may find it appreciates too. Amazon pricing can sometimes come in $30–$60 under MSRP, so check current prices before you order.

Bottom Line

The Lionel Legacy NS Reading Heritage SD70ACe is a must-have for any O-gauge collector who loves the NS Heritage fleet. The combination of Heritage paint authenticity, Legacy 2.0 electronics, and Lionel's build quality makes this one of the best modern diesel releases in O scale. Highly recommended.
