The Norfolk & Western Class A 2-6-6-4 is one of the most successful articulated steam locomotives ever built, and Lionel's LEGACY rendition does it justice. We logged extensive run time on a 12x16 club layout with O-54 and O-72 curves, pulling everything from short coal drags to scale-length passenger consists. Here's the full vibetrains.com review.

Detail and Finish

The Class A's compact-for-an-articulated frame translates beautifully to O-gauge. The boiler casting is die-cast zinc with separately applied piping, sand dome, generator stack, and crisp Norfolk & Western lettering. The tender carries a full coal load casting and detailed pilot trucks, and the drivers — twelve of them across two engine sets — track through O-54 curves cleanly. Cab interior detail includes a backhead with gauges, a working firebox glow, and a crew figure pair that looks great in low light.

LEGACY 3.0 Operation

LEGACY 3.0 brings synchronized chuff and smoke, multi-position whistle and bell, and the full RailSounds 5.0 audio package. The articulated front engine and rear engine each have their own chuff timing, and the smoke unit produces a thick, directional plume that responds correctly to throttle changes. Dual flywheel motors give exceptional low-speed control — we crept the locomotive at scale 3 mph through a switching move and it never hesitated. For wiring tips that get the best out of LEGACY, see our layout wiring guide.

Performance on Curves

The wheelbase requires O-54 minimum and looks substantially better on O-72 or wider. On O-54 the front and rear engine sets articulate visibly through curves — exactly the prototype look you want — but the overhang on scale-length cars behind it is noticeable. On O-72 the locomotive looks proportionally correct from any angle. If your layout is built on tighter curves, this isn't the right purchase; choose a smaller LEGACY locomotive instead.

Sound and Lighting

RailSounds 5.0 is genuinely impressive — the dual-engine chuff overlay is convincing, the whistle has multiple recorded variations, and the brake squeal on deceleration is realistic without being cartoonish. Headlight, backup light, and class lights all operate correctly, and the firebox glow flickers at the right intensity. Run this in a darkened room with the smoke unit on and it's hard to look away.

Verdict

At $1,599.99 the LEGACY Class A is a flagship purchase, and it earns the price tag. Detail is excellent, operation is flawless on appropriate curves, and the sound package is among the best in the LEGACY lineup. If you have the layout to run it and the LEGACY base to drive it, this is one of the best articulated steam models in O-gauge. You can find current pricing on Amazon.
