Lionel's 2026 Legacy release brings that transition to O-gauge with an A-B E7 set and matching Century Limited passenger cars in authentic two-tone gray. Design

The E7 is a beast of a locomotive — 71 feet long over the couplers on the prototype — and Lionel builds it as a proper twin-engine model with dual porthole windows, correct nose treatment, and the fluted stainless-steel side panels that made the Century instantly recognizable. Two-tone gray with the fine lightning stripe is one of the hardest paint schemes to execute cleanly and the paint on our sample is showroom quality. The A unit has a full cab interior with two crew figures and factory illumination. The B unit matches the A perfectly and includes twin exhaust stacks with functioning smoke. Passenger cars are 21-inch aluminum-bodied with die-cast trucks and blackened wheels. Every car has factory interior lighting with warm LEDs and silhouette figures visible through the windows.

Setup

Straight out of the box the set runs on any AC transformer with basic bell and horn. Legacy Command Base unlocks the full diesel sound package — dual EMD 567 prime movers, dynamic brakes, air compressor, and a range of horn signals. The B unit is a dummy — no motor — so all pulling power comes from the A unit, which is more than enough for the four included cars. Track geometry is the biggest constraint: 21-inch cars need O-54 curves minimum. On O-42 the cars will clip the pilot and each other on tight S-curves. Plan accordingly. Performance

The A unit's motor is smooth and powerful — no hesitation at slow speed, no lurching at speed transitions. Legacy dynamic braking is a legitimately fun feature: a Century Limited approaching a station stop with the DB rumble spooling up is one of the best audio moments in O-gauge. Directional lighting works correctly at both ends of the A-B set, with a factory-installed Mars light on the A and a red marker on the B when reversing. The included passenger cars roll freely on their die-cast trucks and stay coupled with Lionel's operating knuckle couplers. Interior lighting is warm and even across all four cars — no bright spots, no dead cars.

Value

At $1,499.99 for the locomotive pair plus four matched passenger cars, the value math is compelling. Buying an A-B set separately and then hunting for matched cars would run closer to $2,000.
